Is Labrador Guide Dog Training Complicated? A Little More Patience Makes Your Dog More Obedient
Labradors are a common dog breed, and many families keep them as pets. Some have asked me whether Labradors can be trained as guide dogs and if the training process is complicated. Actually, the training process is not complicated. As long as we reasonably arrange training programs and give it more care and patience, we can definitely train it to be a guide dog. So what does Labrador guide dog training include? Let’s take a look together.
1. Training Basic Skills

Guide dog work can be considered a relatively advanced skill, so to teach a Labrador to guide, it must complete basic training and some basic actions.
2. Familiarize with Daily Routes
A guide dog is like a blind person’s compass. Its main job every day is to lead the way, so it must first become familiar with the owner’s daily necessary routes. During training, take it along designated routes frequently. I suggest not feeding it before departure; feeding it after reaching the destination works better.
3. Practice the "Walk" Command
During training, the trainer should consider the perspective of the blind person and their needs. Therefore, in training, we don’t just lead the dog but also wear sunglasses and carry a cane. Once everything is ready, give the dog the "walk" command. While walking, try to have the dog ahead of us and control its pace. When it walks steadily in front, say "good" to it.
4. Practice Crossing the Road
When crossing the road, let the dog first look at the traffic light. If it's red, issue the "stand" command and let it observe the red light. Also let it look at the green light, then give the "walk" command. Repeated training over time will help it learn to look at the traffic light before crossing.
5. Resist Temptations
The most important step in training a Labrador as a guide dog is training it to resist temptations. We can have people occasionally throw some snacks or toys on the designated training route. When it tries to go for the treats or toys, we need to pull it back in time, helping it gradually learn to resist temptation.
No matter what kind of dog it is, with a little more patience, we can train them to be guide dogs. The skills I share not only suit guide dog training but also help pets become better behaved and more obedient.
