Ear cropping is only carried out for certain fighting dogs or large-eared dogs for aesthetic reasons or to facilitate movement. For example, after ear cropping, the American Boxer appears to have a longer neck and a well-proportioned bone structure, not bulky, with brisk and light steps and a strong presence. Its lips are wide and drooping, which matches the body lines with the ear shape. In contrast, ear cropping is prohibited in the UK, so the same Boxer looks more robust, with a sturdy frame but a short neck. Ear cropping is generally done within 2-3 months after birth.
During ear cropping, a muzzle is put on the dog, an assistant steadies the head, the hair is shaved at the surgical site, then routine disinfection is performed. Local infiltration anesthesia is administered, and a scalpel is used to cut the predetermined skin area. The skin and cartilage are bluntly separated, and about 2 cm toward the ear root direction is separated. The cartilage in that area is removed, and the remaining skin naturally forms a cuff. Bleeding is fully controlled, anti-inflammatory powder or penicillin powder is applied, the skin is sutured, wrapped with gauze and absorbent cotton, and an outer bandage is fixed to prevent scratching.
Ear cropping must be performed according to the 'ear pattern.' If the cropping is inappropriate, the ears may eventually droop, which not only looks unsightly but also adversely affects ear canal hygiene. Therefore, pet dogs kept at home do not necessarily require ear cropping.
