Introduction to Bordeaux Dog
Bordeaux Dog
The Bordeaux dog, also known as: French Mastiff, Bordeaux Bullmastiff, belongs to the large working dog category. Originating from Bordeaux, France, it is fierce and powerful but has now been domesticated to be more gentle.
1. Appearance
A short, stout mastiff breed with great strength. It has a massive and heavy head (possibly the largest head among all dog breeds in the world). The upper lips hang down wrapping the lower jaw on both sides. The nostrils are open. The muzzle length is about one-third of the head length, colored black or red. The skin on the neck is loose, forming obvious throat folds. The ears are set back on the head and hang down. The body is solid and short, with a fairly flat back and a slightly tucked-up belly. The front legs are strong and straight, while the hind legs are very powerful. The tail root is thick with a finer tip. The skin is very thick, with short and soft fur, varying shades of brown (from reddish-brown to pale yellow), with red or black patches on the face. White markings sometimes appear on the feet and chest, but white on other parts is considered a fault.
A typical brachycephalic dog with deep forehead wrinkles and heavy folds. The Bordeaux is a very strong and powerful dog with a solid yet harmoniously structured body. Its body is close to the ground, with the chest plate’s distance to the ground slightly less than its chest depth. It is short and sturdy, structurally adapted for movement, beautiful in appearance, with an intimidating look. Important body proportions: body length (distance from shoulder point to midpoint of the buttocks) is greater than shoulder height, with a ratio of 11:10. Chest depth is more than half the shoulder height. The maximum length of the muzzle equals one-third of the entire head length. The minimum muzzle length equals one-fourth the total head length. Male Bordeaux dogs have a head circumference either larger or smaller than shoulder height.
2. Temperament
After years of breeding, it is no longer as fierce as its original ancestors. Quiet and gentle. Very loyal to the family and brave to dedicate itself. A determined and resolute guardian, it is a first-class guard and protection dog. Not afraid of strangers. However, males cannot tolerate the presence of other males of the same sex. Despite its scary appearance, it is gentle with family members, especially children.
The Bordeaux dog has a natural talent for guarding, with high alertness and great courage but without excessive aggressiveness. It is an excellent companion dog, loves to follow and adore its owner. Calm, able to handle extreme external stimuli with balance, males generally have a desire to dominate.
Has potential aggressiveness, so caution should be taken by those without dog-raising experience.
