Illustrated Guide on How to Express a Dog's Anal Glands
Dog anal glands can accumulate dirt, and if they cannot be emptied naturally, the owner needs to express them; otherwise, full anal glands easily cause odor and anal inflammation. So how exactly should we express anal glands? Hopefully, the following article will be helpful to everyone.
Express during your dog’s baths. The method is as follows:
First: Lift the dog’s tail upward to expose the anus. Face the location of the anus.
Second: Regard the dog’s anus as a round face. Place your index finger and thumb at the 4 o’clock and 8 o’clock positions at the edges of the dog’s anus to press. Be sure to use the technique of pressing from inside to outside, from light to heavy. Remember, when expressing, it’s best to cover the anus with a tissue or cotton to prevent smelly fluid from splashing on you.
If the glands have been blocked for some time, the secretion will be squeezed out like toothpaste, not sprayed out. Usually, a gentle squeeze is enough to release it. Normal secretions are pale yellow-brown, ranging in consistency from watery to pasty, and accompanied by a strong odor. If you can feel buildup but cannot express it, it means the anal glands are blocked and must be treated promptly by a veterinarian.
This requires dog parents to explore slowly... If you really can’t grasp the method, go to a pet grooming salon and let professionals do it. Because if done incorrectly, the dog will be very uncomfortable and uncooperative.
