How to Train Dogs to Retrieve Things
Labrador
We often see other people's dogs helping their owners with chores and retrieving things. In fact, in daily life our dogs can fully help their owners in this way. So how do we train dogs in these skills?
1. Let your beloved dog slowly open its mouth, then give the command "bite," and put a newspaper or other item into its mouth, gently supporting its chin until the dog understands the owner's intention to bite the object firmly.
2. Let your dog bite the item, then the owner leads forward using a leash, allowing the dog to get used to walking while holding the item. Once successful, be sure to reward the dog. Repeat several times until proficient.
3. Finally, try loosening the leash and train the dog to go to a distance to fetch items for the owner on its own.
4. The best age for training your dog is 6 months or older, of course not so old that it can no longer walk.
5. The key is to build a solid foundation by first conducting obedience training such as heel and sit commands. Once your dog is used to listening to your instructions, it will naturally master other commands smartly. (Source: PetsZone)
