How to Train a Golden Retriever to Long Jump
Golden Retrievers are relatively intelligent and gentle. They can master these training contents easily after simple training. So, if you want your Golden Retriever to master more skills, such as long jump or high jump, how should you train it?
Long jump training is similar to high jump training. It is also a very intense exercise. Many dog breeds are not suitable for this type of training, such as Chihuahuas, Pomeranians, and Pekingese. In addition, some pet dogs, although large in size, are not good at jumping and therefore cannot undergo long jump training. Actually, for breeds good at jumping, this training is not difficult. Owners should not lose confidence.
In the early stage of training, there should be fewer hurdles or they should be arranged closely together. The specific length should be determined according to the pet dog’s size and physical strength. When using a leash, make sure it does not restrict the dog’s movement. When the dog can easily jump over the obstacles, you can appropriately increase the number of hurdles. Furthermore, you can remove the leash and continue training. The method is the owner and the dog run toward the obstacle together, then the owner gives the command “jump” to let the dog jump over it, while the owner stops at the takeoff point. After training several times this way, the owner can command the dog to long jump from a distance. Finally, the hurdles can be gradually replaced with natural obstacles such as trenches.
Training goal: To teach the pet dog to long jump.
Training equipment: hurdles, leash, food.
Training steps:
One: Let the dog sit about 2 to 3 meters in front of the hurdle. After giving the jump command, the owner and the dog run toward the hurdle together and encourage the dog to jump over.
Two: After the dog jumps over, let it stay still and give food rewards. If the dog has trouble jumping, increase the running distance and try again. If it still fails, consider reducing the hurdle to shorten the distance.
After these trainings, Golden Retrievers learn to jump high and far. This way, when going out to walk the dog, having races will help the dog run faster and have more fun.
