How to Properly Feed an Akita
Akita (detailed introduction)

Akitas are good hunters and prefer to exercise; they are not small in size and are classified as medium-sized dogs. To meet their growth and the energy consumed by exercise, they have relatively high food requirements. Moreover, the food prepared for Akitas should be rich and nutritionally comprehensive.

Generally speaking, the daily feed for Akitas should include about 500 grams of meat, supplemented by an equal amount of vegetable feed, such as cereals, biscuits, and so forth. The meat prepared is best low-fat lean meat, lamb, beef, and so on. It should be cooked first, cut into small pieces, and mixed with the cooked vegetable feed before being given to the Akita.

Besides homemade food, owners can also choose professional pet dog food. The commercially available dog food is formulated according to dogs’ nutritional needs during growth, and there are many brands and varieties. Owners can select an appropriate one based on the Akita’s actual condition, feed on time every day, and also supplement with some fresh vegetables, meat, and other foods to balance nutrition.

Akitas can eat many kinds of foods, but there are also many foods they cannot eat. For example, onions and garlic used by humans, spicy foods like chili and mustard, excessive salt, and so on. Also, raw meat, chilled fish and shrimp are not suitable for Akitas. Meanwhile, snacks like chocolate and other foods containing theobromine and caffeine are unsuitable for Akitas.

Of course, expired, rotten, or spoiled foods, as well as food for other pets—such as cat food, rat food, or rabbit food—are not suitable for Akitas. It should be noted that moderate amounts of animal liver can be good to supplement the dog’s vitamin A, but excessive intake can cause vitamin A poisoning in Akitas, which is harmful rather than beneficial to the dog’s health.
