How to Judge Whether a Dog Lacks Calcium
Bedlington Terrier
Calcium deficiency in dogs has a great impact on their health, especially for puppies. If lacking calcium, it can affect their bodies in many ways, such as incomplete bone development; during the teething period, calcium deficiency might lead to double rows of teeth, etc. Therefore, we should know how to judge whether a dog lacks calcium, so that we can supplement calcium in time.
There are many causes of calcium deficiency in dogs:
1. The calcium content in the dog's food is sufficient, but due to poor absorption functions like enteritis or poor appetite, the dog experiences calcium deficiency due to poor absorption.
2. The dog has absorbed the calcium from food, but due to poor calcium conversion inside the dog’s body, calcium is excreted leading to deficiency.
3. All aspects of the dog are fine, but due to insufficient calcium content in the food, the dog is calcium deficient.
Symptoms that appear when the dog lacks calcium:
Muscle weakness, poor limb strength, soft cartilage, bowlegs, etc. Therefore, calcium deficiency in dogs does not always mean supplementation is required; the cause must be identified.
1. If absorption function is poor, the digestive system needs to be regulated.
2. If conversion function is poor, take the dog for exercise and sun exposure.
3. When actually calcium-deficient, calcium supplements are needed. There are many methods: giving calcium tablets to the dog/letting the dog drink more bone broth/and various calcium supplements.
The effects of calcium deficiency might not be seen in the short term, but the hidden risks are significant. Therefore, for the dog’s health, we should know how to judge whether the dog lacks calcium, so that calcium can be supplemented in time and problems can be prevented.
