How to Correctly Choose a Dog Leash

Dog Walking
Walking the dog is an essential activity for dog owners. Dogs must be taken out to run and move their muscles every day. However, it is important to always have a leash in hand when going out for a walk.
1. It ensures the dog's safety by keeping it within sight, preventing it from getting lost or stolen. It is especially crucial when crossing the street.
2. It allows timely correction of bad behaviors, such as picking up food, chasing or fighting other dogs, or jumping on people. This not only ensures the dog's safety but also helps correct bad habits.
3. It shows respect for people who do not keep dogs or who are afraid of them. Holding the leash ensures the safety of other pedestrians and avoids unnecessary conflicts.
So how do you choose the right leash for your dog? Leashes are generally divided into two main types: harness style and collar style. For puppies, we usually choose the harness style leash. Collar-style leashes are generally considered to offer better control.
Besides the type, you need to choose the right size based on your dog’s body shape. It is generally considered best if after securing the leash, you can still fit one finger between the leash and the dog. An ill-fitting leash that is too big will not restrain effectively, and the dog can easily break free. When a dog lunges forward, a slack leash can increase the force, which may cause injury. If the leash is too small, thin, and tight, it can cause discomfort or difficulty breathing.
We generally choose leashes based on the dog’s chest circumference.
Chest circumference about 25-35CM: choose small size, leash length 1.2M, width 1.0CM, recommended for dogs under 6 kg
Chest circumference about 30-45CM: choose medium size, leash length 1.2M, width 1.5CM, recommended for dogs under 15 kg
Chest circumference about 35-55CM: choose large size, leash length 1.2M, width 2.0CM, recommended for dogs under 40 kg
