What is certain is that the Poodle originated from water hunting dogs. In fact, today’s untrimmed Poodles closely resemble the early 19th-century British Ancient Rough Water Spaniel in appearance. The Poodle was widely used for water hunting, so part of the coat was shaved to facilitate swimming, and trimming into specific styles became fashionable.
