How Dog Toys Train Dogs to Swim
It's the hot summer again, and many owners choose to take their dogs swimming to cool off. However, some dogs are nervous and scared the first time they go into the water. Owners can bring their dogs' favorite toys to train them to swim.
Choose the right swimming location
If it’s the first time bringing a dog swimming, a good place should be selected as a "puppy practice field." A private swimming pool is of course the best choice, and small streams or rivers are also good options. It is important that the chosen practice place is clean and has no debris on the bottom, as this would be unsafe for both humans and dogs. When first bringing dogs swimming, shallow water should be chosen to facilitate teaching.
Take swimming safety measures
Before letting the dog into the water, attach a leash to the dog. Or put a life jacket on dogs swimming for the first time. This ensures safety and makes it easier for owners to control the dog in the water at any time. If the dog encounters trouble in the water, the leash can help rescue it promptly. After the dog is leashed, the "first swimming lesson" can officially begin. Generally, chubby dogs and long-haired dogs float a bit better than others, so they usually learn to swim more easily.
Use toys to practice the dog's swimming ability
At the first swim, the owner should accompany the dog to shallow water so it can get used to moving in the water, and gently splash water onto the dog’s body, but avoid splashing water on its face to prevent discomfort. Sometimes, even in shallow water, the dog may panic and struggle fiercely. In such cases, the owner can place a hand on the dog's belly to support it sufficiently, helping it calm down quickly. When the dog can calmly stay in the water, the owner can use toys to lure the dog step by step to swim forward, helping it adjust slowly. Playful dogs usually happily swim after the toys. Once the dog is used to swimming in the water, it can be taken to swim in deeper water.
