Factors Affecting the Effectiveness of Dog Training
German Shepherd
The most important aspect of training a dog is using the right method; a good method is a major factor in successfully training a dog. However, there are still many subtle factors that can influence training to some extent. Paying attention to these issues can greatly help improve the training effect on the dog. Coupled with the correct training method, this can achieve twice the result with half the effort.
1. Incorrect Practices
1. Do not set requirements for the dog too high or be impatient for quick results, as this can cause setbacks in training and even harm the dog. For example, if a dog unintentionally does something wrong, using a threatening tone to call the dog over and then spanking it with a leash as punishment can cause the dog not to come when hearing the "come" command in the future, but rather run away.
2. Confusing everyday commands with training commands is incorrect. On one hand, this makes it difficult for the dog to form conditioned reflexes to commands; on the other hand, unnecessary language becomes a new stimulus for the dog, eliciting a seeking reflex and disrupting the normal execution of training steps. Therefore, training must be conducted in a quiet environment.
3. Using the same training methods uniformly without adjustments according to different situations means the dog can only perform very simple responses to signals.
4. Training sessions that last too long—some owners are eager for quick results and spend excessive time training their dogs. This leads to overfatigue of the dog’s nervous system, which not only fails to shorten the training process but delays it, and in some cases results in the dog being eliminated. This commonly occurs when other training disciplines progress quickly while one’s own dog progresses slowly, often caused by rushing.
5. Inappropriate rewards. Food treats, petting, or the "good" command can act as rewards and reinforcement in training, but unscientific use of rewards can cause the opposite effect and blur the boundaries between right and wrong. Therefore, rewards must have clear purpose and specificity.
