Eleven Characteristics Tell You the Differences Between Poodles and Bichons
Bichon Frise (detailed introduction)

The editor often encounters many people who cannot distinguish Bichons from white Poodles and thus send photos for identification. In fact, if your photo angle is not good, it is impossible to tell the difference. So today the editor has organized the differences between Bichons and Poodles (detailed introduction). If you still haven't figured out whether your dog is a Poodle or a Bichon, take a careful look and seriously compare, and you will know exactly whether your dog is a Poodle or a Bichon!
  1. Coat Color
Poodle: Red, chocolate, black, white, apricot, gray, blue, and so on.
  Bichon: White.
  2. Coat Texture
Poodle: Coat is curly, naturally coarse in texture, and dense all over the body. Young Poodles have relatively straighter hair.
Bichon: Soft coat, feels like touching velvet or suede, dense. Young Bichons have curlier hair.
 3. Eyes
Poodle: Oval and almond-shaped, set wide apart.
Bichon: Round eyes, the outer side of the eyes and the tip of the nose form a triangle; Bichon's eyes appear larger than Poodle's.
  4. Head
Poodle: Relatively smaller under clean face grooming.
Bichon: Relatively larger under clean face grooming.
  5. Ears
Poodle: Large ears, located at the same level as the eyes or slightly lower, ears are not as large as Bichon's and are thinner. Many white Poodles have ears of different color than the back coat.
Bichon: Small ears, slightly higher than eye level, covered with wavy long hair. Bichon's ears match the coat color, and are large, wide, and thick.
  6. Mouth
Poodle: Characterized by a long and pointed slightly upturned mouth; the length of the stop equals the distance from stop to occiput.
Bichon: Much shorter mouth compared to Poodle, wider face, bite is broader than Poodle's; the length of the stop is 3/5 of the distance from stop to occiput.
If it's a clean-faced Poodle, it's easier to tell; otherwise, use your hand to feel the face shape through the muzzle hair. Besides, Bichons have a unique “charming smile”; if you part the hair by their lips gently, you can see the lip line is different from Poodles.
  7. Body Shape
Toy Poodle: Legs are a bit longer; height and body length are about equal, forming a square shape. At 2 months old, Poodles are slightly larger (except for white toy Poodles).
Bichon: Legs are shorter, more solid and look rounder; body length is 1/4 longer than height, forming a rectangular shape. At 2 months old, Bichons are smaller than Poodles.
  8. Tail
Poodle: Tail should be docked, trimmed into a ball shape, straight tail; if not docked, tail does not curl over the back. Poodle’s tail tip is thinner, tail hair is clearly sparser.
Bichon: Tail is not docked, long and carried over the back. Bichon's tail is thicker with dense tail hair.
  9. Bone Mass
  Poodle: Very light, noticeably so.
  Bichon: Very solid and heavy.
  10. Personality
Poodle: Very smart and lively, obedient and agile.
Bichon: Personality is straightforward, clingy, and gentle.
Bichons have a friendly, lively personality, are smart with excellent memory, and can perform various amusing tricks. However, they can be aggressive to strangers. Because they have long accompanied people, they are very attached and friendly, making great family companion dogs. The only drawback is that they require frequent grooming and daily care which takes up considerable time.
  11. Temperament and Appearance
Bichon: Has quite a character, lively by nature and loves freedom, bringing endless joy to owners. Its soft, curly coat needs trimming to show its beautiful black eyes and the round features of its body and head. When still, it looks like a fluffy, snowy white toy for kids; when moving, it looks like spun cotton candy.
Poodle: An active, alert, and graceful breed with good body proportions and agile movements, showing a confident posture. After traditional clipping and careful grooming, the Poodle displays an innate unique and noble temperament.
