East African Hunting Dog Care Knowledge

The East African hunting dog was a very popular hunting dog locally in its early days, skilled at chasing sheep herds. Later it was introduced to other countries but never gained mass popularity; only a few people liked it for appreciating its character.
  Care Knowledge
The East African hunting dog has smooth, soft, silky fur, with some fine hair on the front legs and behind the hind legs. Sometimes there is fine wool-like hair on the thighs and shoulders. Therefore, it only requires occasional grooming by the owner.
  Grooming Methods
The East African hunting dog is a short-haired breed and does not need extra trimming; basic grooming principles suffice. Using a natural bristle brush to groom and remove shed hair daily will make its coat look smoother and shinier. Do not use scissors, plucking, or scraping to groom; keep its appearance as natural as possible for beauty shows.
Quiet Training Methods for the East African Hunting Dog
In fact, barking is a dog's nature, but some dogs are more talkative than others. If your dog is always noisy, try the following methods:
  1. More exercise: Adequate exercise can consume the dog's energy. After playing or running all day, the dog would rather sleep well than waste energy barking.
  2. Chewing bones: If something occupies the dog's mouth, they won’t have time to bark. The harder to chew, the more challenging. So, before you go out next time, throw your dog's favorite chew toy to keep them occupied.
  3. Mental stimulation: If dogs have something to do, they won’t bark. Before going out, rub their favorite toy to leave your scent on it. When the owner is not visible, lonely dogs will spend more time sniffing the toy for the owner's scent and forget to bark.
  4. Create noise: For more nervous dogs, they bark nonstop at any slight noise. If you cannot eliminate environmental noise, try making some distracting sounds. For example, turn on a noisy vacuum cleaner when the mailman passes by to confuse the dog’s hearing.
  5. Respond to it: Sometimes dogs bark nonstop just to convey some message to the owner. If the owner responds appropriately and praises them after understanding, the dog will naturally stop barking!
  6. Reward it: If the dog refuses to stop barking, the owner should immediately use a firm tone to reprimand: "Quiet!" When the dog stops barking, give some treats or praise as encouragement. This teaches the dog that obedience and quietness earn the owner's favor and rewards.
  7. Ignore it: Like humans, some dogs lose interest in speaking when they have no audience. If they keep chattering, the owner can turn away. Most dogs will wisely close their mouths. To strengthen learning, trainers suggest carrying a small bell—shake it each time the dog barks nonstop, then leave the room once the dog hears the bell. After several lessons, the dog will learn to stop barking upon hearing the bell. Similarly, praise or reward the dog when it stops barking.
  8. Cool down their enthusiasm: Using a water spray can stop dogs from barking. When they bark nonstop, first verbally warn them. If they still don't listen, spray water to calm them down.
Do not let the East African hunting dog lack water in summer. Summer is hot, and pets lose a lot of water through sweating, so owners must ensure they don’t get dehydrated. Cats and dogs need frequent water replenishment in summer. Owners should always keep a clean and sufficient water bowl. Some owners give pets tea, juice, beer, milk, or other drinks, but it is best to give clean water. Tea and juice have no extra benefits or significant harms if given in small amounts. Milk can cause skin and gastrointestinal problems and is unsuitable. Beer negatively affects cats and dogs, especially young and small breeds; their stomachs cannot handle the alcohol. The best drink for cats and dogs is clean water. Occasional alternative drinks are fine but not excessively. It is recommended to equip dogs with pet-specific water bottles, which are hygienic and convenient, allowing dogs to drink anytime. Owners need not worry about their dogs drinking water alone at home when they go out.
