　　1. Three Aspects of Dog Intelligence Assessment
　　Like humans, dog intelligence also needs to be assessed from several different aspects. The main three aspects are: instinct, self-adjustment ability, and work and obedience ability.
　　　2. Dog Breeds Are Not Comparable
　　Instinct refers to the innate nature each breed has been selectively bred for. These abilities are inborn and only require some human guidance and control. Different breeds have different instincts.
　　Comparing instincts of different dog breeds to judge which dog is "smarter" is meaningless because their abilities are too different and not comparable.

　　Self-adjustment ability means how well a dog can learn to do things for itself, including learning and benefiting from environmental experiences, solving new problems, etc. Even within the same breed, self-adjustment ability may vary. This can be measured through specific tests.
　　4. More Obedient Dogs Appear Smarter to Humans
　　The third aspect of dog intelligence — work and obedience ability — is similar to what we call learning ability, i.e., what a dog can learn under human guidance. This is important because humans originally domesticated dogs to train them to work, so they think the more obedient the dog, the smarter it is.
