Care Knowledge of Dachshunds
Dachshund (Detailed Introduction)
Common dachshunds usually have only short hair, but actually there are three types of dachshunds: long-haired, wire-haired, and short-haired. Whether long-haired or short-haired, dachshunds need fur brushing, bathing, and grooming. Below is a detailed introduction focusing on dachshund grooming.
1. Brushing the Dachshund's Fur
Like many other animals, dogs grow thick fur in winter to keep warm and shed fur in spring and autumn. Even pet dogs need to renew their fur. The shed fur not only affects the appearance of the dachshund's grooming but also sticks to various objects and people indoors, impacting cleanliness and human health.
Therefore, when grooming a dachshund, the fur should be brushed regularly to remove loose hair, dirt, and dust, prevent the fur from matting, enhance skin blood circulation and disease resistance, relieve fatigue, and prevent parasitic and skin diseases. Regular brushing also strengthens the bond between owner and dog.
2. Trimming the Dachshund's Nails
Dogs’ nails often wear down by scraping the ground, so nails are easy to damage. Even indoor pet dogs can have nails that grow too long. If not trimmed, excessively long nails may curl and hurt the skin, causing the dog's rear heels to splay, resulting in poor posture. Long nails can also scratch family members and damage clothing, so nail trimming should start as a habit from puppyhood.
Trimming method: Use human nail clippers for trimming nails; adult dogs have harder nails and require special dog nail clippers, or soften the nails by soaking in warm water before trimming. Trim the part of the nail that does not contain blood vessels. The "quick" is visible inside light-colored nails but hard to see in black nails.
3. Grooming the Dachshund’s Ears
Grooming the ears makes the dog comfortable and provides a sense of beauty, generally including floppy ears, cropped ears, erect ears, and ear cleaning.
Dachshunds come in three coat types: short-haired, wire-haired, and long-haired. Aside from similar ear care methods, the grooming for short-haired and wire-haired dachshunds is simpler. The author suggests owners wipe the fur with a soft cloth to keep it shiny. Long-haired dachshunds require frequent brushing to avoid tangling and regular fur care and conditioning. Buying pet hair care products yourself can be more affordable than grooming at pet salons, provided the owner is quite familiar with dog bathing and grooming.
