Build

Head
Expression is intelligent, lively, and elegant. Eyes are dark brown, slightly oval, eyelids fitting closely to the eyeball.
Ears medium-sized, set high, triangular. Ear tips slightly rounded, when resting ears hang beside the head. When alert, ears turn forward, ear roots raised, highest part of ears level with the top of the head. Top of head flat and broad, slight wrinkles, clear contours. Muzzle strong and straight. Nose leather black. Lips clean, Bernese Mountain Dogs have tight lips, upper lip slightly drooping. Teeth scissors bite.
Body
Neck strong, muscular, medium length. Backline from withers to rump level. Chest deep and broad, ribs well sprung, chest depth reaching the elbows. Loins wide and firm. Waist strong. Rump wide, smooth rounded curve to the base of the tail. Tail densely haired. Tailbone straight, extending to the hock or lower.
Shoulders moderately sloping, lying flat, well muscled. Front legs straight and strong, standing, elbows positioned just below the shoulder blades. Wrist slightly slanted. Paws round and compact, toes arched.
Limbs
Thighs broad, solid and muscular. Stifle joint angle proper, tapering smoothly downwards to the hock. Hocks as low as possible, viewed from behind, hind wrists straight. Paws compact.
Coat
Coat dense, medium length, slightly shiny or tidy. Exhibits a bright, natural gloss. Bernese Mountain Dog is tricolored. Base color is deep black. Markings are rich rust and clear white.
