The following are nine taboos for Chow Chow feeding, hoping that Chow Chow dog owners can pay attention to them in daily care.

9 Bad Habits of Dog Owners Feeding Chow Chows

(1) Unwilling to let the Chow Chow drink more water. Many dog owners disagree with letting their Chow Chow drink more water because they are lazy to take them out to urinate frequently. In fact, letting the dog drink more water is a good habit. Drinking more water increases urination, which not only helps remove excess salt from the body but also reduces internal heat.
(2) Do not mix dry dog food with milk but with water. When puppies are six to eight weeks old, most pet owners and veterinarians do not recommend adding milk to the food because drinking too much milk can cause diarrhea and easily lead to digestive problems. (3) Do not always feed rice; cornmeal is recommended. Rice is not easy to digest, and Chow Chow puppies can easily overeat and feel full. For example, you can crush pancakes to mix with vegetables; or cook lamb (beef, pork) and carrots chopped with a little bone broth without salt. Feed puppies three times a day, and reduce to twice when they grow older.

(4) Place food and water where Chow Chow puppies cannot easily knock them over. Unless necessary, the puppy’s food should be fixed in one location. Otherwise, food and water can be easily kicked over by owners or family members, which is not conducive to cultivating good eating habits and designated eating spots.
(5) When feeding puppies, soak the food in water to soften it. When feeding small-sized puppies or toy dogs at weaning, soften the food by mixing with water before feeding. If feeding professional dry dog food or canned food, please follow the portion instructions on the product packaging.

(6) Do not let puppies eat people’s leftovers. Because dogs have different nutritional needs from humans, using human recipes for dog food is time-consuming and troublesome, and it is difficult for dogs to get complete and balanced nutrition. Do not give puppies snacks between meals. If the puppy obeys other training, a small amount of snacks can be given as encouragement.

(7) Remember not to let puppies eat at the dining table. The reason is it promotes bad habits like begging. Feed only at designated times and places with specific food, and place food only in the puppy’s bowl; other utensils should not be used. Besides, do not forget to provide your dog with sufficient and clean water.

(8) Be careful not to consume too much salt. Too much salt intake can cause kidney and urinary system diseases and redness in the eyes. Excessive internal heat can also cause red blisters at the corners of the mouth.

(9) Do not let Chow Chow puppies have the chance to swallow chicken bones, ribs, or fish bones. Because they can lodge in the throat and then break apart. If not stuck in the throat, they may slip inside the body, piercing the stomach wall and intestines.
