10 Foods That Owners Can Share with Dogs
Golden Retriever
We often say that human food should not be given to dogs, which has led to various homemade dog foods—all made with love by pet parents, focusing on low oil, low salt, and low fat. Today, I’m going to tell you that there are actually some foods in everyday life that can be shared with your dog! Aren’t you excited? Let’s take a look.
1. Herring
Cooked herring is a great source of essential fatty acids (EFA). EFAs help improve skin and coat conditions and are also thought to benefit pets suffering from arthritis. But be sure not to give it to seafood-allergic pets!
2. Spaghetti Squash (commonly called Italian Spaghetti Gourd)
Whether cooked or raw, spaghetti squash is not only an interesting vegetable but also quite rich in beta-carotene, which is good for vision.
3. Macaroni
Unseasoned cooked pasta like penne or tortellini can make a great snack. Next time you cook macaroni for yourself, take some out to make a delicious meal for your dog. If your dog isn't allergic to wheat, macaroni will be a special treat.
4. Mint
Mint extract or mint leaves are commonly found in dog biscuits. Even a small amount gives off a strong aroma, and mint has long been considered a beneficial herb for treating stomach ailments.
5. Clear Chicken Broth
Low-sodium, unsalted, and unseasoned homemade chicken broth is great added to your dog’s meals, or you can grind it and freeze it inside a Kong toy as a fun edible treat.
6. Cinnamon
Preliminary studies confirm cinnamon may help prevent cancer and fight bacteria. A small amount of cinnamon powder can be added to dog biscuits.
7. Pomegranate
Rich in antioxidants and vitamin C, pomegranate can be given as juice or seedless fruit.
8. Cheese
This is one of dogs’ favorite foods. Cheese is an excellent source of calcium and protein, but before giving cheese to dogs, choose unseasoned, low-sodium, unsalted types.
9. Tuna
Unseasoned canned tuna can be mixed with a little water and combined with kibble or other fresh foods for dogs. It can also be added to homemade dog biscuits for extra flavor.
10. Barley Grass
Barley grass is highly antioxidant-rich and can be used as a regular snack for dogs. Often sold in many pet stores, it is also known as cat grass.
