Training Cats to Obey Sit Command

Teaching a dog to obey commands and sit down voluntarily is very easy, but getting a cat to obey the sit command requires some effort. During training, the owner can squat down and place a hand on the cat’s back near its hind legs while saying “sit.” If the cat sits down, immediately praise it gently and stroke it, but do not reward it with food right away. After a short while, say “stand up” to the cat and release the hand, rewarding the cat with a small amount of its favorite food. Repeat this practice, gradually extending the time the hand rests on the back to increase the cat’s sitting duration. After some time, training can be conducted without pressing the cat’s back. If the cat stands up halfway during training, immediately bring it back to the original spot, make it sit down, firmly say “sit,” and then repeat the previous training steps.
After about one to two weeks of training, most cats can begin to obey the command. At this point, you can change the command from “sit” to “stand up” when the cat is sitting, allowing the cat to gradually differentiate between the commands “sit” and “stand up,” and then you can start training other commands.
