The Ten Ways Cats Show Affection You Need to Know

1. The most common way to show affection is wrapping their tail around you, touching your legs with their head or body, or rubbing you with the back of their ears or face. This is to leave a familiar scent on you, making them feel more comfortable, and possibly seeing you as part of their group.
2. Licking you, just as they lick other cats, signifies trust and affection.
3. After being petted, they lick themselves to “taste” your scent. This scent is one we cannot detect but cats can perceive.
4. When a cat lies on your lap, it definitely likes you; it won’t jump onto the lap of someone it dislikes.
5. Bringing you “gifts,” like a dead mouse, shows affection and that it considers you its mother.
6. A cat holding its tail upright indicates very strong affection. You’ll notice when approaching strangers or other cats, their tail is lowered.
7. Rolling over signals “play with me,” and cats won’t play with people they dislike.
8. Putting their paws on your arm is a way to “reaffirm” their affection for you.
9. When it slowly curves its back and rubs your legs, it’s saying: “I love you!”
10. Cats purr for many reasons; if they purr while rubbing against you, it means they truly love you.
