Techniques to Train Cats to Fetch Things for You
Norwegian Forest Cat
Step One: Basic Training
First, put a collar on the cat to control its behavior. During training, hold the collar with one hand and hold the object to be fetched, such as a small wooden stick or a plush ball, with the other hand. While giving the command "fetch," wave the object in front of the cat. Then, firmly place the object into the cat's mouth. When the cat holds the object, immediately reward it with the command "good" and gentle petting.
Next, give the command "release." When the cat shows the action of releasing the object, immediately repeat the "release" command. Once the cat releases the object, offer some food as a reward. After multiple training sessions, the cat will respond appropriately to the "fetch" and "release" commands.
Step Two: Full Action Training
The owner first waves the object in front of the cat to attract its attention. Then, throw the object a few meters away and point to the object while giving the "fetch" command, encouraging the cat to retrieve it. If the cat does not go, the owner should gently lead it toward the object while repeating the "fetch" command and pointing at it. After the cat grabs the object, the owner gives the "come" command. When the cat returns to the starting point, the "release" command is given. Once the cat releases the object, provide a food reward immediately. By repeating this training, the cat will learn to fetch the item thrown by the owner. (Source:PetsZone)
