The Sphynx cat (Canadian hairless cat) is famous for its almost hairless appearance, with prices very high, at least over 5000 yuan, and tens of thousands of yuan at the high end are also normal.

The degree of hairlessness of the Sphynx cat varies; some have very fine “peach fuzz” all over the body, while others have only fine fuzz on their limbs. Due to the lack of fur, the Sphynx cat’s skeletal structure and muscle tissue are visible. It is a very sturdy cat with elegant long lines, slightly loose skin that forms wrinkles in some places. They have a somewhat wedge-shaped head, large eyes and ears, relatively long legs and tail, and neat round paws.

Personality Traits

The Sphynx cat is an energetic, very intelligent, curious, and affectionate cat. Many people describe them as friendly to both family and strangers much like dogs. They are very outgoing, crave attention, want to be involved in everything you do, and can even be annoying and intrusive—be prepared to be supervised and assisted in all household affairs, from paperwork to DIY, cooking, and bathing!

Sphynx cats are also unusual because they are very sociable and enjoy being with other animals, especially other Sphynx cats—note that this does not mean they can entertain themselves; it means you will have several Sphynx cats on site to supervise and assist you. Always!

It’s not surprising for hairless cats; they really like warmth and are very lovable, always sneaking under the down comforter whenever they get the chance!

Historical Origin

These hairless cats were discovered in 1966 when a gene mutation occurred in a litter of domestic shorthair cats in Ontario, Canada, producing a hairless kitten. Hairless cats have existed historically—in fact, it’s said that the Aztecs kept them—the hairless gene, wherever it appears (dogs, guinea pigs, mice, and rats also have this gene), has always attracted some humans because it is an appealing trait to selectively breed pets for.

Today, most modern Sphynx cats are descendants of two kittens found in Minnesota in 1975 and three kittens found in Toronto in 1978.

Although often described as suitable for allergy sufferers, this only applies to the most hairless examples and only if the patient is allergic to hair rather than cat saliva or dander.

Nutrition and Feeding

Every cat is unique, with its own preferences, dislikes, and needs regarding food. However, cats are carnivores, and each cat must obtain 41 different specific nutrients from their food. The proportions of these nutrients vary depending on age, lifestyle, and overall health, so it is no surprise that a growing, energetic kitten requires a different nutritional balance in its diet compared to a less active senior cat. Other considerations to remember include feeding an appropriate amount of food according to feeding guidelines to maintain “ideal body condition” and individual preference for wet or dry food recipes.

Precautions

The Sphynx cat is an active breed in great need of physical and mental stimulation. They can (and will) entertain themselves with toys and scratching posts, but they need attention and affection from their favorite people to be truly happy. These social animals do not do well alone for long periods—they need owners who have lots of time and are willing to invest it.

While Sphynx cats enjoy chasing ping pong balls and batting feather toys, their two favorite pastimes are climbing and perching—no bookshelf is too high or wall shelf too narrow for them to sit on. Activity spaces, cat trees, and owners who don’t mind their home turning into a jungle gym are perfect for the active Sphynx.

Because the Sphynx cat always walks around naked, these cats tend to be sensitive to sunlight and cold. You might find your Sphynx frequently in warm spots around the house, such as sunny windows, warm vents, or even snuggling under blankets with you. If you live in a cold climate, dress your kitten in a fluffy (and stylish) sweater or jacket for warmth.

But their nakedness does have advantages: Sphynx cats may tolerate water better than most cats, which is good because their hairless bodies need frequent bathing. The lack of fur also means Sphynx cats are considered low-allergenic. While no truly hypoallergenic pet exists, they may be a good choice for cat lovers who often sneeze or itch around kittens.

Although lively and playful, the Sphynx cat has a gentle and easygoing personality, getting along well with children, household dogs, and other cats—especially when introduced as kittens.

Health Issues

Sphynx cats are generally healthy cats, with an expected lifespan of 9-15 years. However, like all breeds, they are prone to certain health problems.

“Common health conditions diagnosed in Sphynx include dental diseases, skin problems (such as oily skin), and heart issues,” said Lennox. “HCM, or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, is the most common heart disease in cats, and Sphynx cats are also affected.”

According to the Animal Welfare University Federation, Sphynx cats are also prone to a disease called hereditary myopathy. This causes muscle weakness, leading to difficulty moving and even walking normally.

Reputable Sphynx breeders will screen your kitten for health issues. It is very important to keep a close eye on your cat’s veterinary appointments and checkups, as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and other health issues might not be detected until late in the cat’s life.
