Understanding the condition of female cats in heat

Tabby cat

The subtle signs of a female cat's pregnancy begin to appear around the third week after mating. At this time, due to vigorous hormone secretion, the fur becomes shinier, appetite improves, the fur around the breasts thins, and the nipples turn pink. At this time, the owner must not press her belly casually to avoid miscarriage or injury to the fetus; it is advised to take the cat to the hospital for confirmation.

Four to five weeks after mating, the belly’s bulge becomes more obvious. The enlarged uterus presses the bladder, causing frequent urination, sleepiness, and the food intake doubles compared to usual. Pregnant female cats need to intake sufficient protein and calcium to provide enough nutrients for the babies. If constipation or severe diarrhea occurs, excessive straining may cause miscarriage; fresh and easily digestible foods such as lean meat, milk, and small fishes can be provided.

By the seventh week of pregnancy, the female cat’s belly is so large it is visible at a glance: after 62 to 69 days of pregnancy, the kittens can be born. Owners don’t have to excessively protect the pregnant cat but should pay attention to environmental changes. For example, her dedicated entrance and exit should be enlarged in advance to avoid compression from the large belly; if the opening cannot be enlarged, it should be temporarily closed.

  【Age】

Compared to humans, the average lifespan of cats is much shorter. Well cared-for house cats can live 13 to 18 years. However, stray cats with unstable food and shelter, combined with threats from accidents, reportedly only live about 3 years.

Many owners learn about the impermanence and preciousness of life from their beloved cats and can therefore calmly accept the death of their pets. Kittens after 2 years of age are equivalent to 24 human years. From then on, each additional year equals 4 human years. At 10 years old, cats officially enter old age.
