More Than 20 Loving Cat Shelters Appear at Nanjing Normal University Xianlin Campus
In the biting cold wind, everyone longs for warmth, and the stray animals outside are no exception. These days, many "loving cat shelters" have appeared at Nanjing Normal University Xianlin Campus, not only providing a safe haven for stray cats on campus but also letting them experience a warm winter full of love.
At the roadside near the West District cafeteria of Nanjing Normal University Xianlin Campus, under a sunshade umbrella, two stray cats, one yellow and one calico, are nesting inside simple shelters made from foam boards and plastic baskets. Nearby, a small bowl contains plenty of cat food.
Reporters learned that these cat shelters were placed by a school public welfare club called "Plum Blossom Trace." Besides the roadside shelters, more than 20 other cat shelters are distributed in hidden corners of the school dormitories.
In addition to setting up "loving cat shelters" for stray cats, the "Plum Blossom Trace" club also raises funds through charity sales to perform sterilization surgeries on campus stray cats. They plan to reduce and limit the stray cat population size.
Chen Li, vice president of Nanjing Normal University's "Plum Blossom Trace" club, told reporters that stray cats sometimes mate closely related, resulting in high mortality rates for the kittens. Also, when stray cats are in heat, they tend to be noisy. Considering the kittens' life quality and students' safety, they have sterilized about 70-80 stray cats so far.
Visits to several universities in Nanjing revealed that stray cats are common on campuses, and schools generally do not deliberately drive them away or kill them. Besides Nanjing Normal University, students from Nanjing University and Nanjing Sports Institute have also made multiple cat shelters to help stray cats stay warm during winter.
University teachers believe that truly caring for stray animals cannot rely solely on the "charitable acts" of loving clubs. Students on campus should avoid randomly discarding food waste, feeding without care, privately raising, or abandoning pet cats.
