Introduction to Parasites in Cats: Ascariasis
Burmese Cat
Symptoms:
Infected cats show progressive weight loss, enlarged abdomen, delayed development, vomiting, and abnormal cravings. Heavy infections may cause intestinal obstruction, intussusception, or even intestinal perforation. Larvae of the roundworm migrate through the lungs causing respiratory symptoms such as coughing, and severe cases may experience difficulty breathing, presenting as pneumonia.
Treatment:
Pyrantel pamoate 100 mg/kg body weight, single oral dose, to expel adult worms; for cats around 2 weeks old, 20 mg/kg body weight, single oral dose, to expel immature worms. Levamisole 10 mg/kg body weight, orally, once daily for several days. Ivermectin 50 mg/kg body weight, single oral dose. Albendazole 10 mg/kg body weight, orally, twice daily for 2 days.
Prevention:
1. Generally start deworming cats at 20 days old, then monthly once, and after 7 months old, once every quarter. Food should be clean and hygienic. Because of the large number of resistant eggs, utensils must be washed and scalded with boiling water. Feces should be treated through fermentation.
2. People should wash hands frequently after touching pet cats and dogs, and regular checkups are necessary if required.(Source:PetsZone)
