How to Train Cats to Avoid Scratching Furniture?

Cats like to crawl under bed covers to sleep. Many cat owners often sleep with their cats in the same bed. These are harmful cat-keeping habits and unsanitary practices that should be completely changed. Since some cat diseases such as dermatophytosis, lice, and toxoplasmosis can easily spread to humans, it is very necessary to train cats not to get into beds or crawl under covers.

Cats should be trained to develop the habit of sleeping in their own special cat beds. Before training, a very comfortable bed should be prepared for the cat, and a hot water bottle can be placed inside the bed in winter. If after these measures the cat still refuses to sleep in the bed, a cover can be placed on top of the bed to prevent it from running out. After several training sessions, the cat will no longer run out, and of course will not crawl under the covers.

If the cat has already developed the habit of getting onto the bed and crawling under covers, the following methods can be used to correct this:

Direct punishment method: When the cat gets on the bed or crawls under the owner's covers, immediately pat the cat’s buttocks with your hand, or hit the cat with a rolled-up newspaper or book, and scold loudly, then chase the cat off the bed. At this time, the owner's attitude must be stern, showing a very angry expression. Because cats are very sensitive to their owner's emotions, as long as the owner shows annoyance, the cat will not dare to get on the bed or crawl under the covers anymore. After repeated training, the cat’s bad habit of getting on the bed can be corrected.

Remote punishment method: Prepare a bamboo water spray gun or a toy water gun filled with water in advance. When the cat tries to jump onto the bed, the owner hides where the cat cannot see and immediately sprays water at the cat. The cat will immediately flee after being hit by the sudden water attack. After a few times of attacking the cat with water, the cat will develop an aversive conditioned reflex to the bed and no longer get on it.

Electric shock method: Charge a battery capacitor and place the electrodes at the spot where the cat usually sleeps on the bed. The owner controls the switch of the battery capacitor. The owner pretends to sleep on the bed, and when the cat gets on, immediately press the switch. The electric shock can immediately knock down the cat; generally, after one electric shock, the cat will develop an aversive conditioned reflex to the bed and will no longer get on it.

Training cats not to scratch furniture:

Cats really like to scratch objects such as tree trunks or wooden items with their claws. Sometimes they also scratch on the ground. While scratching objects, cats have the habit of secreting a sticky and smelly liquid. During scratching, this secretion is rubbed onto the surface of the scratched object. The smell of this secretion attracts cats to come back and scratch the same place again. For house cats, if their training is not properly managed, they often damage furniture and floors by scratching.

Before training, prepare a wooden post about 70 centimeters long and 20 centimeters thick, fixed upright near the cat bed, convenient for the cat to scratch. The wood material should be solid. During training, bring the kitten in front of the post, hold its two front legs with both hands, place the two front paws on the post, simulating the cat’s scratching action. This allows the secretion from the cat’s paw glands to be applied to the post. After many training sessions, combined with the attraction of the secretion’s smell, the cat will start scratching the post and develop the habit. Eventually, the cat will stop scratching furniture.

For cats that have already developed the habit of scratching furniture, cover the scratched furniture with plastic boards, wooden boards, etc. Then place a sturdy wooden post or board at a proper location in front of the scratched furniture. Use the same method as above to train the cat to scratch on the post or board. When the cat forms the habit of scratching there, slowly move the post or board to a location you think is appropriate. Each move should not be too large, about 5 to 10 centimeters each time, and should never be rushed.
