How to Train a Cat to Carry Objects
Oriental Shorthair Cat
For cat owners, seeing dogs carry objects makes them very envious. In fact, with the correct training method, cats can also carry objects. However, cats are not as easy to train as dogs, and this training is relatively complex for cats. It should be done in two steps, and the owner needs to have enough patience.
The first step is basic training, which involves putting a collar on the cat to control its movements. During training, hold the collar with one hand and hold the object for the cat to carry with the other, while giving the command "carry." Force the object into the cat's mouth, and when the cat holds the object, immediately use the command "good" along with petting as a reward. Then give the command "drop," and when the cat drops the object, feed it some food and pet it as a reward. After multiple training sessions, when someone issues the "carry" or "drop" commands, the cat will perform the corresponding carrying or dropping actions.
The second step is training the whole sequence of actions. The trainer moves the object the cat can carry or drop in front of the cat to attract its attention, then throws the object a few meters away and points to it while giving the "carry" command, instructing the cat to retrieve it. If the cat does not go, the trainer should lead the cat to the object and repeat the "carry" command, pointing at the object. Once the cat holds the object, the command "come" is given. When the cat returns to the trainer, the command "drop" is given, and when the cat drops the object, it is immediately rewarded with food. Repeating this training will enable the cat to fetch objects thrown by the owner. (Source:PetsZone)
