How to Stop Cats from Scratching Furniture
Cats have an instinctive behavior of scratching to sharpen their claws, mainly to wear down long nails. When there is no professional scratching post at home, cats habitually scratch furniture to achieve this purpose. Many pet cat owners often see their cats scratching up the home furnishings, and new furniture also gets damaged by their scratching, which makes the owners both angry and upset. Therefore, owners need to strengthen their training of cats to stop the bad habit of scratching furniture.
1. Prepare a dedicated scratching post for the cat. When the cat shows signs of scratching, bring it to the post and let it scratch there in a fixed place.
2. Prepare a water spray bottle, mainly for educational punishment. When you find the cat scratching furniture and verbal warnings are ineffective, a harmless method can be used. Spray the cat directly with water to frighten it and let the cat realize that scratching furniture is wrong.
Changing a cat’s habit of scratching furniture must be done gradually, and owners should not be impatient. They should patiently and carefully train the cats, helping them to quit the bad habit of scratching furniture.
