How to Effectively Discipline a Cat That Did Something Wrong
American Shorthair Cat
First and foremost is immediate on-site criticism
When it does something wrong, you should immediately scold it loudly with “No!” or “Hey!” Of course, don’t stop because they understand your words, but because they get frightened by the loud noise and halt. If this is done repeatedly, the cat will gradually associate doing such things with loud scolding, which is bothersome, so it will stop. Taking a cat back to the scene of the misdeed to lecture it is completely useless; cats are forgetful animals, and even after being scolded for the incident, they won’t understand the reason.
The second rule is patient education
It’s not that after criticizing today it’s okay to allow it tomorrow, but you should always maintain the same patient attitude when criticizing. If you give up halfway, all the previous efforts would have been wasted. Thinking “Anyway, it will forgive me soon” will make the cat become complacent.
The third rule is absolutely no physical punishment
If you hit the cat casually, it will develop fear toward you and consequently a timid personality. Since cats’ bodies are much smaller than humans’, hitting them can easily cause injury.
The fourth rule is to give immediate and generous praise when it behaves well
Although cats don’t understand the owner’s words, they are very aware that the tones of scolding and praising are different. When praised, the cat’s mood improves, and thus the effectiveness of education gradually improves.
