How to Correct Cats' Biting and Scratching Behavior

For dogs, humans are their owners, but unlike dogs, cats like to treat humans as friends. When an owner reaches out to them, they usually hold the owner's hand and gently bite with their teeth. This is a way cats show closeness to humans, an instinctive behavior of cats. However, many people mistakenly believe cats like to scratch and bite.

Suddenly pulling your hand away can cause the cat to treat your hand as prey and instinctively pounce, scratch, and bite. If we don’t pull away, they usually won’t bite too hard. Of course, we should avoid suddenly putting our hand out. When your cat rubs your hand with its nose or licks you, verbally encourage it. If you also scratch its little chin at the same time, it will immediately feel comfortable and squint its eyes, and will be less likely to extend its little hooks. After doing this a few times, the cat will really like you, and when playing, it won't bite hard or scratch you with its claws anymore.

After a while, you will definitely gain a clingy, playful, and spoiled super companion because to cats, your actions mean love and care. If you play with your cat like this from a young age, it will definitely be very good to you when grown, liking to be close to people and appearing very well-behaved to others—a well-mannered cat.

When playing with cats, try not to hold toys directly with your hands. Cats are reckless when playing, and their reaction speed is faster than humans, often catching you unprepared. You can tie toys to a long string or tie a string to the end of a small stick about the length of a chopstick and attach the toy to the string to play with the cat. This prevents the cat from catching your hand. (Nowadays there are special cat teaser wands that cats absolutely love.)

If possible, consider raising two cats at the same time. Two cats can accompany each other, play very well, won’t be lonely when the owner is away, and because they have a playmate, their interest in "attacking" people will greatly decline.

Kittens are like a blank sheet, just like human children; they do not know right from wrong. Only through the owner's patient education can good habits be formed so they live harmoniously and happily with humans.

  Warm tips:

  1. After being scratched by a cat, clean the wound with iodine.

  2. If bitten by a cat, especially a stray cat, get a rabies vaccine within 24 hours at a local health and epidemic prevention station.

  3. Don’t forget to regularly trim your cat’s nails at home. When trimming, only cut the white tip part; never cut into the red area. For cats that like to play outside, avoid trimming their nails to prevent falls caused by nails not hooking onto surfaces when jumping. (Source:PetsZone)
