How to Correct a Cat's Habit of Disturbing at Night
Cats are nocturnal animals, so they often jump around the house late at night. However, nighttime is when people rest and sleep, so how can you stop a cat's disturbing behavior at night?
Here are several methods to correct this bad habit in cats:
1. Prepare a warm and comfortable bed for the cat away from the bedroom.
2. Close the bedroom door when sleeping to prevent the cat from running in and out.
3. Keep the cat awake during the day or increase its daytime activity. You can play games with the cat, place a cat tree by the window for it to jump on and watch the outside scenery. Rotate toys every few days to keep the cat interested and prevent boredom.
4. Play with the cat before bedtime.
5. Do not feed the cat early in the morning, as it might call you to get up because it's feeding time. Instead, feed small amounts several times a day. If no one is home during the day, consider a timed automatic feeder, hiding food inside anti-depression toys, or hiding small treats around the house. Feed the cat its main meal (the largest portion of the day) before bedtime.
6. When the cat starts to play at night, make a sudden noise to startle it. With repeated occurrences, this can correct the behavior; however, do not let the cat discover that the sound is made by you.
7. Completely ignore its nighttime behavior. Even if it loudly demands you to get up, resist responding. But if you decide to do this, you must be consistent; giving in halfway will only make the cat believe persistence leads to getting what it wants.
