Cat Training Encyclopedia: Cat Scratching Post Training
Persian Cat
The earlier the training of the scratching post begins, the better. Keep the cat in a room or enclosed environment where the interior materials are as scratch-resistant as possible. Place the cat’s bed, bowls, toys, and litter box inside the room, and install a scratching post near the cat’s bed with an appropriate size, texture, and firmness. The scratching post can be bought or self-made. Most cats prefer scratching posts that provide rebound resistance when pulled downward and are covered with vertical string fibers.
The scratching post can be placed against a wall or positioned standing alone vertically or horizontally, as long as it won’t topple when the cat uses it. The post should be long enough to allow the cat to stretch out fully when scratching. Some scratching posts have a mint scent that may stimulate certain cats. Additionally, try letting the cat’s claws rub the scratching post a few times to leave scent marks from sweat gland secretions. You can also hang a toy with a string around the scratching post, moving it to entice the kitten to play nearby.
When you see the cat scratching the post, give appropriate petting and praise. Once the cat is accustomed to using the scratching post in the confined environment, gradually expand the activity range to the whole home. Scratching is a marking behavior intended to leave a message; therefore, the scratching post must be placed in a prominent location so the cat can use it anytime.
