Cat Diseases: Pseudopregnancy in Cats
Tabby Cat
What exactly is pseudopregnancy?
Simply put, pseudopregnancy is a clinical manifestation of hormonal imbalance within a cat's body, where an unpregnant cat shows the same symptoms as if it were pregnant. Pseudopregnancy usually occurs after a cat has gone through heat and mating. Over time, the female cat's breasts gradually develop and enlarge, and in the later stages, milk can even be expressed. Some cats with strong maternal instincts will even try to nurse other kittens. The abdomen of a pseudopregnant cat also slowly enlarges, eventually looking as if it contains several kittens. The cat’s behavior changes as well; in the early stages, cats may experience loss of appetite, slight vomiting, restlessness, and irritability. In the mid to late stages, the cat's appetite gradually returns and grows larger as if never satisfied, and its temperament becomes gentler. Eventually, the cat may even start looking for things to build a nest. The vulva becomes more swollen, resembling the condition right before delivery. Inexperienced owners can be truly fooled by this realistic behavior and become more nervous than the cat, busy preparing all kinds of things for the arrival of kittens, but no matter how long they wait, no kittens appear. Many owners even worry that the cat is having difficulty giving birth and rush to take her to the vet for a cesarean section. However, after examination, the doctor finds an empty abdomen with nothing inside. It’s almost unbelievable, but that is the reality, leaving you with nothing but an empty joy.
