Taking your dog out for a walk not only helps your dog develop a good habit of regular and timely bowel movements but also helps the owner get some fitness benefits. Of course, taking dogs out for walks always involves certain risks, and not all dogs are suitable for walking outside. The editor has compiled some precautions for dog walking for owners to learn quickly.

Rules for Dog Walking That Every Good Owner Must Master
When taking your dog out for a walk, the owner must remember to hold the leash properly. This is responsible both for others and for your own dog.

  1. The Necessity and Benefits of Walking Dogs
  1. Fixed Daily Times
A responsible and truly loving dog owner should insist on taking the dog out twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening. The time should be fixed, and the dog should be leashed during walks. In cold weather, a warm jacket should be worn.
  2. Walking Relieves Stress
Owners also need to walk; by going outside for a walk, you can vent the day’s fatigue and stress, making your mood feel better. Walking can also improve the dog’s immunity, release stress, and stabilize personality.
  3. Intimacy with Your Pet
Walking makes your friendship with your dog stronger. Some dogs prefer to walk close to the owner’s left side. In such cases, accommodate them by walking slower. The walking process can also increase the bond between owner and dog and boost the dog’s confidence.
 2. Which Dogs Are Not Suitable for Outdoors
  1. New or Sick Dogs
Some pet owners like to take newly bought dogs out for walks, but this is not a good habit. Because non-fully vaccinated dogs need time to adjust to many places, and dogs that are sick or just recovering from serious illness are also not suitable for frequent walks.
  2. Puppies Under Three Months
Puppies have weaker resistance. They need vaccinations to increase immunity and protect against external pathogens. They should only go outside when they are healthy, with normal diet and behavior.
  3. Female Dogs in Heat
If there are male dogs nearby, female dogs in heat require extra caution, as they attract many male dogs. Keep distances between them. Care must be taken when walking dogs during this period.
  4. Avoid Infectious Diseases
Dogs that have not received vaccines yet. When outside, avoid contact with sick dogs and avoid places frequently visited by other dogs to prevent infectious diseases. Some dog pathogens can survive in external media for several days.
 3. Dog Walking Rules
  1. Get Used to Leashing
Many people choose convenience, or are afraid of trouble, and neglect leash use. If a puppy has an accident or gets lost and stolen by bad people, they will regret it badly. Using a leash can prevent injury and also stop the dog from biting people.
  2. Regular Walking Time
Use a leash for outdoor walks to exercise your dog. The walking time and frequency must be regular. Twice daily, small dogs walk for ten minutes, medium dogs for 20-30 minutes. If you skip a day, reduce the exercise on the next day and then gradually return to normal.
  4. Skillful Use of the Leash to Prevent Losing Control
  1. Start Indoors
Begin indoors by letting the puppy see and sniff the leash, then attach the leash to the proper collar. Keep the puppy on your left side, loosen and tighten the leash with both hands, hold food with the right hand as a reward, and command "sit."
  2. Learn to Give Rewards
Start walking, step forward with your left foot first. When the dog walks beside you, say "come along." If the puppy rushes forward, lightly pull the leash to pull it back. If the puppy walks at your side, give it a reward.
  3. Use the Left Hand to Guide Right Turns
After your dog obeys a series of commands, slowly increase the distance between you. If your dog follows closely, you can train it to turn right, guiding it with your left hand and saying "come along."
  4. Training Progressively
When turning left, you can increase your speed, but hold the food in front of the dog's nose to slow it down. Let the puppy get close to your left foot and as it gradually slows down, say "slow down."
  5. Use a Short Leash (Length 1.5 meters)
Start dog walking training with a short leash, slowly increasing time and speed daily to gradually build your dog’s endurance. When your dog can walk easily for 30 minutes, switch to long leash training.
  6. Use a Long Leash (Length 3 meters)
When your dog can comfortably complete short leash training (30 minutes), change to a long leash. Mark every 30 cm on the leash by tying knots. Increase length by 30 cm increments as your dog can complete the set time easily, then add 30 cm more.
