How to Train a Papillon? Thanks to the Right Method
Many people want to train Papillons, but training a Papillon is not that easy. Training a Papillon requires correct commands, hand gestures, and relatively professional training. Most people's training purpose is to make the dog have a certain obedience according to commands and have some delaying ability.
The dog should be sensitive to the "lie down" command, and once the gesture is made, conditioned reflexes should form immediately. Method: let the dog sit on the owner’s left side, step forward with the right leg by one step, bend the body, and then use the right hand holding meat to tempt the dog. When the dog's behavior shows the desire to eat, slowly move the food downward while shouting the "lie down" command, and the left hand should also pull the dog’s collar to stimulate it. Under the temptation of food and the stimulation of pulling the collar, the dog will immediately perform the lying down action. But when the dog lies down, don’t forget to give the dog a food reward.
After a short break, use the command to make the dog sit again. With enough training, it will form a conditioned reflex in the future. You need to slowly reduce or even stop using food and mechanical stimuli until the dog fully responds to the owner’s command to lie down.
Another method: also let the dog sit on your left side. The owner’s left leg should step back one step, in a single-knee kneeling posture. Both hands reach around the dog’s back to hold the dog’s front limbs respectively. While shouting the "lie down" command, gently press down on the dog’s shoulder area with your arms. The mechanical stimulation will make the dog lie down. When the dog succeeds, be sure to give some food reward or stroke its back as a reward. But for dogs with sensitive skin, it's best not to touch them.
You can also train the dog to lie down on command from a distance and develop its delaying ability. The method for commanding the dog to lie down from a distance is: after the dog sits, the owner walks in front of the dog, about one meter away, facing the dog. Hold the leash with your left hand, make the lying down gesture with your right hand, and shout the "lie down" command. If the dog doesn’t move, repeat the command or gesture several times. The right hand can also pull down on the leash so the dog has to lie down. After the dog successfully performs the action, you can gradually extend the distance to about 10 meters. Remember to continuously review the dog’s actions during this process, go slowly, don’t be too anxious, and keep a moderate distance.
